I Supported John Edwards
I am a self-professed left wing liberal and I supported John Edwards when the primary first began. He is an honorable man, who stood for the things that mattered to me:
- Help for lower and middle income families, including rural America.
- Education that works.
- Green technology and alternative energy.
- Universal health care.
- Civil rights and liberties.
- Inclusion of all people, not exclusion of some.
When John left the primary race, I had to choose another candidate. To be honest, with my left-wing leanings, I wasn't too excited about this prospect. I went to the Senate's Thomas system and looked through the Bills that each candidate had sponsored and cosponsored. I also looked at their voting records. Honestly, there was not a lot of differences here for the years that they were both in the Senate.
For Hillary, what stood out, was her voting history for years when Obama was not there. And, her consistency in standing up for the issues that mattered to her. That type of loyalty is important to me. I also saw that she voted in a way that told me she was capable of occasional compromise with Republicans. This is going to be mandatory for any President who wants to get legislation passed and things done.
And, I looked back a personal history I had with her. I worked as an at home residential care provider for veterans for many years. In my home state of NY, I saw her fight for the veterans there to keep their facilities open. She fought against tremendous odds and won. I am glad someone is standing up for the rights of veterans - our young men and women in Iraq are going to need her help when this is over.
I can honestly say that I miss John Edwards, but Hillary is now my choice of candidate. My personal dream team would be a Hillary Clinton - John Edwards ticket. Then, I know things would get done!
Take Care, Sharon
